We are at the beginning of this journey — identifying the right land, the right crops, the right partnerships, and the right processing investments and we are building it with the careful deliberation that agriculture demands. Four forces are converging to make African agriculture one of the most compelling investment themes of the next two decades. First, global food prices are rising structurally as climate change reduces agricultural productivity in traditional food-producing regions. Second, Africa’s population will double by 2050 adding 1.3 billion food consumers, most of them in urban areas that cannot grow their own food. Third, international food companies and commodity trading houses are increasingly focused on securing traceable, sustainable African agricultural supply chains. Fourth, global investor interest in agricultural land as an inflation hedge and long-term store of value is growing rapidly. Agro-processing investment: plantation agriculture generates its best returns when raw material production is combined with processing — converting cocoa beans into cocoa liquor, palm fruit into refined oil, cassava tubers into starch or flour. GTH Sarl’s agricultural roadmap includes investment in processing facilities that add value to the raw materials our plantation operations will produce. We are evaluating cassava starch processing (for food, pharmaceutical and industrial applications), palm oil milling (for edible oil and oleochemicals), and cocoa fermentation and drying centres (for premium export-grade cocoa).
